Dancin’ with myself

by Debbish on January 24, 2013

Regular readers will know I’m struggling to find a gym in my new hometown. The two front-runners each only have one dance (Zumba) class a week and given my love of dance-based exercise, I’m struggling to feel even vaguely enthusiastic as I trial each of the gyms.

In all honesty I envy those who aren’t reliant on a gym or class-based exercise. I envy those who jump out of bed and head off for a run every day, or do their own homemade circuit sessions. I also envy those who simply insert a DVD or Wii or Xbox game and leap about their lounge room.

The latter is definitely a sore point for this green-eyed monster girl because I USED to be one of those people.

While in an exercising-frenzy at high school, I used to partake in a Jazzercise program, which aired back in 1983-84. Yes kiddies… there were no horses and carts, but we did have legwarmers, leotards and video cassette players. I’d record a few episodes and do a couple in a row before school each day.

And when I think back to the woman in the unbelievably conservative white leotard (worn attractively with black tights) I realise… we’ve come a long way baby!

And, on the subject of home workouts, I have a fabulous treat for my Aussie readers!

Zumba® Fitness Core, has just been released on Nintendo Wii and Kinect® for Xbox 360 in Australia offering Zumba-lovers or potential converts a way to “dance your way to a sexy six-pack!” And who wouldn’t want that?!?

PicMonkey Collage Zumba

It features 40 new songs from artists like Enrique Iglesias, Don Omar, Sean Paul, Kat DeLuna, The Donnas, Bob Marley and 33 international dance styles from around the world.

Apparently you can choose from 45 different pre-set classes (30 in the Wii version), or customise your workout to suit your preference, with this innovative new interactive fitness experience!

I have TWO copies of Zumba® Fitness Core (either Nintendo Wii or Kinect® for Xbox) to give away.

And… all you need to do to enter, is leave a comment telling me why YOU would like to win this fabulous new release. And although I’m keen to read your responses, winners will be drawn randomly.

The competition will close midday AEST on Thursday 31 January 2013 and is only open to Australian residents. This competition is now closed. Thanks and good luck to those who entered.

As for my overseas readers, I’d still love to hear if you have tried exercise DVDs or games?

Disclaimer:
I was offered a copy of the release to review, but declined given my lack of access to a Wii or Xbox. The two giveaway copies, however, have been provided by 505 Games, a global publisher of video games, and Majesco Entertainment Company. And if you’re not one of the lucky winners, the releases are available at all of the usual places!

Oh Deb I would love to win the Wii game. There are no classes anywhere near where I live – I think I could actually do this with the kids watching and joining in. Thanks for a great competition.

PS I hope you find a solution to your gym dilemma soon!

Good luck Annaleis… at least I have some gym options! (Frustrating though they may be!)

I would love these even though I don’t have an x box or Wii. I do however have a good friend and a sister who both live in a rural area so there are no gyms around and we have to rely on dvd’s, Wii, X box etc. Or maybe it will mean I just have to buy a Wii which I have been wanting to do for a few years now. ;)

I had to laugh at the memories that this post evoked. I too remember the special leotards of the 80s. I HAD a special leotard in the 80s. It was a hot pink shiny lycra one and I bought it with my pocket money from Target. And I thought I was hard-core when I wore it (alone doing exercises in my bedroom – hey, I wasn’t going to actually let anyone else see me in it). I wore it until it fell apart and one day it just never came back when I threw it in the wash. I still suspect my Mother of that hate crime.

I actually spent ages trying to find some picture or reference to the show I used to watch on TV back in the mid 80s. I’m pretty sure it was just called Jazzercise and it featured a dark-haired woman (v.skinny, though with broad hips unless the TV made her look wide but flat?!) who ALWAYS wore a white leotard. I’m pretty sure she was American and suspect the show was made there as well. (Long before ‘Aerobics Oz Style’!)

Oh, don’t be like that! But… think about that sexy six-pack you could have if you win!

I’d really love to win because I’m saving up to get Ned a Wii or Xbox thingie for Christmas this year and I figure I should have some games on their too. Might as well make it a healthy one!

Cool giveaway!

Oh indeed. Plus I assume the ease of not having to OUT to exercise is preferable when you’ve got a little one at home and need babysitting etc!

Ok so I am the US commenter but I have the regular Zumba for my Wii and I have used it a couple of times and once I get more confident with the routine it will be blast! My Wii is my workout buddy!

Wonderful to hear Jules. I know you’ve mentioned trying a few new workouts recently!

Apart from the obvious drive to win (a sexy six pack) I would love to scare my household and open the blinds and scare my neighbors with my fabulous dance party by myself! And I’m dying to try Zumba but am yet to find a class that works.

Debbish January 24, 2013 at 6:58 pm

Well, doing it at home would be the next best thing I suspect! Even better there’d be no self-consciousness until you get the moves right!

Sounds like a good idea Jodi if that what makes you feel more comfortable! And you may well get hooked!

Oh yes…. a former favourite Zumba instructor I had in Brisbane had some great moves. Her ‘party bottom’ (fast hip gyrations!) were my favourite. Am yet to go anywhere to unleash the moves on an unsuspecting public though!!! :-)

I’d love to try Zumba but i’m so uncoordinated I’d be too nervous to try it in public unless I could practice in private first. My new Xbox is helping my healthy eating plan loads. It’s the only thing I know that can distract me from chocolate.

Reply

Debbish January 26, 2013 at 8:33 pm

Oh wow, hadn’t thought of an Xbox like that… though I’m like that when I’m on my computer, writing!

And yes, it can be nice to practise in private first!!!

I need to win one of these ! after having my 4th child in september i am left feeling with a massive amount of weight to lose ,i have spent the last 10 years being over weight but i am now at the heaviest i have ever been and i would love to dust off the wii and get myself moving and hopefully find y zumba body.

Debbish January 26, 2013 at 8:34 pm

I suspect having exercise options available at home is essential when you have a baby to care for! Getting to a gym would be almost impossible!

Reply

Danielle K January 25, 2013 at 9:47 pm

I’d love to win because I really want to try Zumba, but am way to nervous to go to a class…no rhythm!!! :)

Reply

Debbish January 26, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Hi Danielle, yes, practising in the comfort of your lounge room is an excellent option! I find once you have some of the basic moves down you’re right!

Barbara January 25, 2013 at 11:41 pm

Zumba is a lot of fun! Wii exercise is something I should do more of this year. The kids can join in as well. I’m not entering contest….I’m far from Austrailia.

Reply

Debbish January 26, 2013 at 8:35 pm

No worries Barbara, but thanks for your comment! I love Zumba as well – well, mostly any dance-based exercise. I don’t have a Wii but know people who involve their kids in their workouts – a great idea!!!

I’ve come to the conclusion that I actually HATE going to the gym.I feel self-conscious as I am over-weight and Im also badly co-ordinated. Everyone at the gym looks”perfect” in their designer gear and skinny bodies and I just feel like a huge blob with two left feet! However I still want to exercise and lose weight slowly in my own way. I love the idea of doing zumba in the privacy of my own home where I can exercise freely without being self-conscience or anxious and enjoy the music and have some fun! Thanks for a great giveaway :)

Terri, I can imagine it would be difficult without access to a gym. I realise I shouldn’t take the ones I have available, for granted.

I’m addicted to Zumba, and need some new routines & moves because as great as the current ones are, they’ve become so repetitious that I no longer need to see on screen what they’re doing, I just do it like a robot!

Reply

Debbish January 30, 2013 at 6:57 pm

Di, I must confess I sometimes find that with classes unless the instructor adds in new routines on a regular basis!

Reply

Diana O January 30, 2013 at 2:25 pm

For all the fun & fitness in my own home. No more humiliating classes, where the world can see how uncoordinated I am.

And probably a healthier feed!
But I really want to try harder,

And be super great for my heart!

Thanks for the great giveaway!
I would love to win the Wii game because making it to the gym I was signed up to from where I live was no longer a productive use of my time, and being a dirt poor student I couldn’t afford it anyway. I love staying active and saving time so this would be perfect, plus “playing” it on the Wii would make it feel so much more fun!

I’ve always feared the gym. Maybe it’s the fact that everyone already seems super fit and healthy and can seem to run on the treadmill for hours on end! The thought of running or working on any gym equipment for hours also seems a bit dull, boring and repetitive to me soI think Zumba Fitness Core would be perfect for me. I mean, I already dance around whenever I hear a good beat (and when no one is looking, haha) so making this my exercise and my way to get fit seems like a foolproof plan! Thanks and fingers crossed!
